The people of Kibarani sustain their lives primarily off the Kibarani
Dumpsite and are extremely destitute - many are illiterate and

sick internally and externally. The children take the hardest toll:
malaria and diarrhea, skin diseases and septic/chronic wounds are very
common. A medical clinic is needed to treat and prevent acute and
long-term illnesses and to provide information and education about
vaccinations and prevention of diseases to the community. The grant
will be used to support the funds needed to rent and equip a health

The Mercy Children’s CentreLocation: Bumala, Western Kenya Sponsoring Club’s Length of Affiliation: 2 years Parent Organization: Independent charity Website: www.mccentre.org Funding Breakdown: 100% donations
Purpose of the Grant:
The Mercy Centre is a response to the overwhelming need for care for
Kenya's 1.5 million AIDS orphans. Charles Oduor, a teacher from Bumala,

education. He and his colleague Pius Arikama found an equal need among
the slum dwellers of Kawangware in Nairobi and started to use Pius'
church as a safe haven and school for the area's orphaned kids. The
school now owns an acre campus in Bumala with a new school house and
110 students up to grade 7 and houses otherwise homeless children in
Kawangware. Their vision is to ensure all the children are clothed,
well fed, healthy, safe, and happy and are provided with the education
and modern skills they are eager for. The grant will provide a much
needed electrical hookup, basic lighting facilities and a computer
center at the new Bumala school facility.

Purpose of the Grant:
Child Fund New Zealand works closely with its partner CCF Kenya. The
role of Child Fund NZ is to raise funds for projects. CCF Kenya’s role
is to provide technical support and oversight to local staff and
communities who take a lead role in implementing projects in their
communities. The school which provides education for 550 students from
various local tribes is perceived as a place of refuge, which has had a

facilities. The permanent classroom will alleviate the strained
facilities and the fence will provide a safe learning environment for
teachers and students since the school is situated in an insecure area.
