2008 FAWCO Foundation Development Grant Recipients

The FAWCO Foundation announced the recipients of the 2008 Development Grants at the FAWCO Conference in Seoul. FAWCO clubs nominated 35 projects this year. This is truly a global program as the projects spanned 25 countries from four continents. We should be encouraged by the remarkable and innovative projects that were nominated. 55 clubs participating in the voting process to select the recipients. The Foundation awarded one grant in eight categories. Listed below are the recipients of The 2008 FAWCO Foundation Development Grants.


A PLACE TO LEARN - sponsored in part by Barcelona Women’s Network $3500
The primary school of Assumer educates approximately 64 students in Avilla, a rural commune in Morocco. The school has potable water but no indoor plumbing. The Grant would fund the construction in the school building of a toilet for the girls and another for the boys, as well as for the building housing the school’s teachers, who live there..

AROUND THE CORNER, A WORLD AWAY - sponsored in part by AWC Luxembourg $3500
Peaceful Home for Children is a rural project. The children are orphaned by AIDs or are disabled, have no parents and little hope for the future. The grant will be used to help construct and furnish a safe and secure compound of 6 permanent family-style houses.

CRITICAL HEALTH CONCERNS - sponsored in part by AWC of Basel $3500
Heart To Heart Shanghai has assisted many needy children through its clothing, books and toy donations and by also raising funds to sponsor 94 needy Chinese children's heart-surgery. The Grant will be used to sponsor heart surgeries for more of these children.

EFFECTS OF VIOLENCE - sponsored in part by the AWC The Hague $3500
Mayday! Mayday! was started as part of “Oasis of Carei” shelter program. The shelter provides homeless, abandoned and orphaned children with food, housing, and health care enabling them to escape a life of prostitution or theft. Originally an abandoned building, the shelter cares for up to 40 children. The Grant will be used to build two new bathrooms.

ENDING HIV/AIDS - sponsored in part by AWC Auckland $3500
Grandma-2-Grandma helps Tanzanian grandmothers (bibis) who are raising their AIDS orphaned grandchildren. The Grant will be used to: 1) Help the bibis educate women and girls in their communities on HIV/Aids prevention, and 2) Allow them to stockpile craft supplies need to create the batiks, thus increasing sales.

Salma with her 9 grandchildren. Of her 9 children, 4 daughters died of AIDS along with husbands at ages 23, 26, 28, 32.

AW OF SURREY FEED THE WORLD - $3500
The Caritas Athens Refugee Program offers a variety of services to refugee families, including monthly food bags to around 80 of these families. The contents contain essential items including a liter of olive oil used daily in Asian and African cooking which at present, the center must buy. The Grant would be used to purchase this otherwise expensive commodity for the food bags.

AWA OF VIENNA HOPE THROUGH EDUCATION - $3500
Tulay Ng Kabataan, was created in 1998 to aid the poorest children in Manila. It provides basic needs, such as food and housing for girls, the poorest of the poor, from the shantytowns of Manila, but does not provide for their education. The Grant will be used to pay for the education of one or more girls for a year.

SKILLS FOR LIFE - co-sponsored by AILO Florence and AW of the Eastern Province $3500
When women are given opportunities they can begin economic activities and allow them to participate in decision making of the community. This is a dynamic village whose members want to improve their lives. Grinding grain into flour is the most labor intensive work the women do. A mill would create extra time and will allow the women to receive the necessary training in literacy, numeracy and management. The Grant will be used to purchase the grain mill.
